I had the privilege of being asked by the newly inducted State Bar President, Buck Rogers, to deliver the Invocation at the 269th Board of Governors Meeting held this past weekend on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at The Westin Jekyll Island.  It was, of course, my honor to do so.  I have had many requests for a copy of the invocation, including from President Rogers himself, so I thought I would share it hear with all of you along with my sincere best wishes to President Rogers for a wonderful Bar year.

INVOCATION at the State Bar Annual Meeting

May We Join In Prayer:

 

God of all Blessings,

Source of all life,

Grantor of all wisdom and grace,

This morning, we thank you for the gift of life,

For the breath that sustains life and for the food of the Earth

That nurtures life.

We give thanks for Pat O’Connor and his spouse and partner in life, Carol. We give thanks for Pat’s leadership by example, selflessness and devotion to our beloved profession.

And we ask your blessings on Buck Rogers and his spouse and partner in life, Mandy. We ask that you grant Buck the wisdom, courage and grace he will need for the year ahead.

We pray also for the members of this Body, for the Governor, for the Supreme Court, for the Court of Appeals, for all trial courts, for our Legislature and for all who bear responsibility of leadership in this great state and on whose shoulders lie the duty to protect its laws and Constitution, and the Constitution of the United States.  Help us to preserve our blessed heritage of freedom and to make secure our institutions of law, equality and justice. May we always walk in the dignity of free persons, secure in our rights and faithful in our obligations.

Today, we give thanks for Freedom, God, for we know true freedom underlies human dignity.

We give thanks

For the Freedom of Speech and Expression, that we may express our beliefs openly and publicly, without fear of repercussion, knowing that a Society is only truly free when its citizens are free to express themselves, as we do here and to exchange ideas with respect and civility;

For the Freedom of Faith, for the Freedom to worship in any manner we see fit for ourselves and our family;

For the Freedom of Fellowship, to spend our time with those friends who lift us up, with those who make us better together than we are by ourselves, with those who cherish and protect the same fundamental Freedoms we do, Friends who in bad times gut it out with us and who in good times cheer for our success and those who help make life more enjoyable with laughter or a smile;

We give thanks for Family, without which there would be no life, for the unconditional love of family who can make the worse day in the office or in court all better with a simple hug, family who love us no matter whether we win or lose and whose love sustains us;

For all these Freedoms and blessings, we give thanks.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

In the name of All that is Holy,
