Last week I attended the 2026 State Bar of Georgia Annual Meeting in Amelia Island, Florida. I would sum up this wonderful Annual Meeting in two words: Fun and Fellowship! I don’t know what number Annual Meeting this was for me, but the number is large. Considering that my now 31 year old son and now 29 year old daughter attended their first State Bar of Georgia Annual Meetings when they were both riding in car seats, my attendance goes waaaayyyy back! I have been practicing law for 38 years now, and a I really began getting involved in the Georgia Bar when I opened my own firm in 1997. As a Past President of the Georgia State Bar, I thoroughly enjoy going to the Annual Meeting, reconnecting with old friends, building relationships, meeting new folks and just enjoying incredible fellowship.
We started the week with the whole Clark Family at Amelia, Island. That was a blessing just by itself! We kicked off the fun week with dinner at Down Under Restaurant in Fernandina Beach, Florida! It was a great evening of Family Fun and Fellowship. My son, Chaz, who is an artist/architect and his wife, Roxy, who is a teacher, are not lawyers but didn’t mind hanging out with us for a couple of days.
The rest of the meeting was a whirlwind! So much to do and so many people to spend time with and catch up on their lives and practices.
Opening Night Festival: Dinner, drinks, dancing, laughing, talking, hugging, joking, fellowshipping.
Friday morning started with a Wellness 5K honoring and in memory of Georgia Pro Bono Director Mike Monahan, who died of kidney cancer. It was wonderful having Mike’s family join us. Even at 7:00 a.m., the Florida heat and humidity was high and we stayed well-hydrated. Alex was sweet and stayed back and walked the 5K with me instead of running it. Justice Carla McMillian joined us on our walk. After we finished, we were pretty proud of our accomplishment!
Friday morning we attended the Board of Governors meeting. It amazes me how much work and time our Board Members give of themselves to do the hard work of the Georgia Bar. Hats off to them! Friday evening we attended the Young Lawyer Division Dinner. Our daughter, Alex Clark, received the Joe Dent Hospitality Award, named after our good friend Judge Joseph Dent from Daughtery County. We are so proud of Alex, who is a term clerk for the Honorable Justice John Ellington of the Georgia Supreme Court as she enters her fourth year of law practice.
Saturday evening we attended the various Georgia Law Schools’ receptions. I am going to brag and say Emory Law School’s was the best! But they were all fun. We also attended the General Practice and Trial Section Traditions of Excellence Award where Justice Ellington and our good friend Cathy Harris Helms both won awards. our friend B.J.Bernstein also won an award given to her by the outgoing President of the State Bar, Chris Twyman. We were blessed to have the entire Supreme Court of Georgia bench with us for the meeting (and many of their family members) and many of the Georgia Court of Appeals judges, too.
We finished the evening with a wonderful dinner and dancing. Some folks found their way out to the Cigar and Bourbon Bar and some to the Speakeasy Lounge, but we just stayed on the dance floor, enjoying great music.
Fun and Fellowship pretty much sums it up. I am so proud of my Georgia State Bar and so proud to be a Georgia Lawyer! I am often reminded that Bobby Jones, the greatest amateur golfer of all time, gave up what would have been an amazing professional career as a golfer to do the one thing he thought was better and more meaningful, to become a Georgia Lawyer. That’s me. That’s how I feel, too.
